The world of education today might be considered in direct conflict with Charles Darwin.\u00a0 He brought us \u201cevolution\u201d.\u00a0 Modern teaching theory in some areas of the United States could be better classified as \u201cdevolution\u201d.\u00a0 As our society \u201ddevolves\u201d into barbarism, so our educational system follows.<\/p>\n

Case in Point!\u00a0 The Texas Board of Education on Friday, November 22, 2013 (or was it the year 1513) refused to approve a \u201cbiology textbook\u201d widely accepted throughout the United States because one reviewer was concerned that it\u201cpresented evolution as fact rather than theory\u201d.<\/b>\u00a0 nytimes.com 11\/23\/13<\/p>\n

The textbook review process in Texas is contaminated by individuals who refuse to accept evolution or climate change as scientific fact.\u00a0 \u201cBiology\u201d, a well respected publication from Pearson was written by Kenneth R. Miller, a Brown University Biologist, and Joseph S. Levine, a science journalist.<\/p>\n

The review process was disrupted specifically by a member of the review panel, Ide P. Trotter, a chemical engineer and financial advisor, who cited errors in the textbook, specifically with regards to evolution.\u00a0 Note: Mr. Trotter is listed as a\u201cDarwin Skeptic\u201d<\/b> on the website of the \u201cCreation Science Hall of Fame\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ronald Wetherington, Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at SMU, upon scanning Mr. Trotter\u2019s complaints, declared them as \u201cnon sequiturs and irrelevant\u201d.\u00a0 To quote\u00a0 Dr. Wetherington, \u201cIt was simply a morass of pseudoscientific objections\u201d.<\/p>\n

Yet, in spite of the criticism of Trotter\u2019s objections by world class scientists, the textbook remains under further review by the Texas Board of Education and is not being utilized in Texas classrooms at this time.<\/p>\n

In 1925, in the infamous \u201cScopes Monkey Trial\u201d, evolution was brought to public attention in a trial displaying two of the most famous attorneys at that time, Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan.\u00a0\u00a0 Several years later, educational systems throughout the United States embraced evolution as scientific theory.<\/p>\n

In 2005, in Dover, PA, a small town south of Harrisburg, eleven parents sued their school board for including \u201cintelligent design\u201d (considered by many a sly pseudonym for creationism) in the ninth grade biology curriculum.\u00a0 On December 20, 2005, Federal Judge John E. Jones III ruled that teaching \u201cintelligent design\u201d in the classroom was unconstitutional.<\/b> \u00a0He declared that \u201cintelligent design\u201dmay not be taught as an alternative to evolution because \u201cit is a religious viewpoint that advances a particular version of Christianity\u201d.<\/p>\n

To summarize, in 1925, evolution caught public attention. \u00a0In 2005, a federal judge declared the teaching of \u201cintelligent design\u201d as scientific fact unconstitutional. And in 2013, the Texas Board of Education reverts back to 1925 with an attempt to circumvent Judge Jone\u2019s ruling by \u201cbanning\u201d a textbook that declares evolution as science.\u00a0 The final conclusion to be drawn is that while Darwin declared that humans have evolved throughout the centuries into more civilized beings, he apparently forgot to visit Texas.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
