{"id":278,"date":"2015-01-03T18:35:19","date_gmt":"2015-01-03T18:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pearlsofwisdom.guru\/?p=278"},"modified":"2016-08-11T04:01:34","modified_gmt":"2016-08-11T04:01:34","slug":"the-events-of-ferguson-mo-the-impact-on-americans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pearlsofwisdom.guru\/?p=278","title":{"rendered":"The Events of Ferguson Mo. &#8211; The Impact on Americans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pearlsofwisdom.guru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Michael-Brown1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-279 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/pearlsofwisdom.guru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Michael-Brown1-161x300.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Brown\" width=\"292\" height=\"544\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Upon receiving the featured photo in an e-mail, I could not help myself from having a very strong\u00a0 reaction, one of outrage.\u00a0 However, after giving the matter some thought, I came to the conclusion that it was highly conceivable for individuals from varied backgrounds to have very different and very unique reactions to this picture.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Elitist white people could simply laugh and see the obvious fact that Michael Brown was far from a saint and that he had no one but himself to blame for what occurred.\u00a0 Had he stayed out of trouble, e.g. not robbing cigarettes from a local convenience store and whatever other misdemeanors he had committed in the past, he would never have arrived at a confrontation with a police officer, ultimately resulting in his demise.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>More fair-minded citizens, regardless of race or ethnic heritage, might view it as a terrible tragedy, that an individual of any race committing such a minor crime should suffer such a dire fate.\u00a0\u00a0 They might view the police officer as overly aggressive, exacerbating the situation and elevating it to an inevitable fatality. \u00a0However, they might also consider that had Michael Brown not been involved in a criminal act, this whole situation may have never occurred. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally, Al Sharpton followers, e.g. particularly blacks with major chips on their shoulders, would only see the policeman as the perpetrator of evil. They would view Michael Brown as a poor black kid, one who never had opportunities in life, one who had been forced to resort to stealing for survival, and that his fate was a direct result of a community where racism permeated every black citizen\u2019s existence.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>=====================================================<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The events in Ferguson, Missouri over the past few months have been extremely troubling and have created a major stir around the country.\u00a0 Combining these events with the case of Eric Garner in NYC, race relations may be at an all time low since the era of Martin Luther King.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The question that we need to ask ourselves is: would Office Darren Wilson have shot a 6\u20198\u201d, 250 lb <em>White<\/em> male coming toward his car? And the answer is \u201cwe will never know the answer to that question\u201d!\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>One thing is perfectly clear; the last thing that anyone in this country needs is the Al Sharptons of the world encouraging rioting and looting by screaming the word \u201cracism\u201d every time there is an incident between a white police officer and a black citizen.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>=====================================================<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>There is no denying the existence of racism and other prejudices in our society. Vestiges of the Ku Klux Klan still exist in today\u2019s society.\u00a0 Schools still exist which are predominantly filled with black students, while other schools are predominantly white, some by choice, others by default.\u00a0 This is not going to change anytime soon, but at least it is out in the open and we can work toward a future with better race relations.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anti-Semitism still exists around the world.\u00a0 Recent incidents in France accentuate that fact, almost seventy years after the Nazi empire was defeated.\u00a0\u00a0 Human beings are flawed and all the laws and oratory preaching that bias by race, religion, ethnicity, or gender is wrong is not going to ever change that fact.\u00a0 That reality, coupled with the fact that certain parents pass their biases down generation to generation, truly believing that they are in the right, perpetuates this atrocity. Ignorance is truly bliss for these individuals. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The glass ceiling still exists for women in many major corporations.\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, there has been progress.\u00a0 However, numerous women in the workplace have equal positions and work just as hard, if not harder, than their male counterparts and do not earn equivalent salaries and are not promoted on an equal basis. \u00a0We can only aspire to a future where this ceiling will be\u00a0 shattered, never to be rebuilt.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>=====================================================<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>l things being equal, let\u2019s deal with the issue at hand, i.e. Michael Brown being shot by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri and the black population in Ferguson believing the shooting was racially motivated.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On a simplistic basis, we ask the question: \u201cDid Michael Brown deserve to die?\u201d Obviously, he did not; at 18 years old, he had his whole future ahead of him.\u00a0 And who is to say that he could not have turned his life around and had a very bright future, with success and happiness? But that is not what happened. A young life was snuffed out in a heartbeat, in a moment of anger and panic that will haunt the town of Ferguson for many years to come.\u00a0 But whether we like it or not, we have to consider that this young man had been in trouble before, so it should not be so shocking that he chose to confront a police officer rather than walk away. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>One question that keeps cropping up is why the Officer Wilson did not just shoot Michael Brown in the leg.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that what police officers should be trained to do, i.e. to stop the assailant, rather than kill?\u00a0 I certainly cannot speak for Wilson, but there are several obvious reasons that this questions have no simple answer: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(1) Police officers may fire their guns very few times in an entire career. All police officers are not necessarily expert marksmen.\u00a0 Under duress, in a crisis situation, it would be logical to shoot at the largest target, which would be the chest. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(2) In confrontational situations, a split second decision must be made.\u00a0 A bad decision could create a situation where the officer\u2019s life might be in imminent danger.\u00a0 Additionally, there is never a guarantee that the individual charging the police officer does not have a weapon of some sort.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(3) Even the best trained officers may panic in a situation where they feel threatened. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>======================================================<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We have a black President of the United States that sends his ignorant fool of an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Attorney General, Eric Holder, to Ferguson<\/span>,<\/span> only to insult every police officer who has ever served, to incite violence with incendiary remarks, literally throwing napalm on an already explosive situation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If one listens to the extremely insightful and poignant comments of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sheriff David Clark of Milwaukee<\/span> regarding Mr. Holder, one understands the complexities of this situation clearly and why Eric Holder should have stayed at home!<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dTX49GyDBe8<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/eric-holder\/\"><strong>Eric Holder<\/strong><\/a><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">,<\/span> Attorney General of the United States, as chief law enforcement officer for the nation, should have maintained an aura of neutrality in any volatile situation until all the facts were revealed. Rather, Mr. Holder chose to be an agent representing Mr. Obama\u2019s personal attitudes toward the events in Ferguson.\u00a0 <em>\u201cWhile the Obama White House sent three administration officials to attend\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/michael-brown\/\"><strong><em>Brown<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/span><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2019<\/span>s funeral,<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/eric-holder\/\"><strong><em>Mr. Holder<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/span><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>flew to\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/ferguson\/\"><strong><em>Ferguson<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/span><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>to let \u201cthe community\u201d know that he and the president had their backs. He spoke of his own mistreatment by police as a young man, i.e. racial profiling, and got the crowds spun up with promises of change\u201d.\u00a0 In essence, Eric Holder became an agitator, stirring the racist pot! Mr. Holder\u2019s position as chief legal representative of the Obama administration, made it clear that the lawyers of the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division had an agenda, i.e. seeing that Officer\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000; text-decoration: underline;\">Darren <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/darren-wilson\/\"><strong><em>Wilson<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/span><strong><em> was to be held accountable, rather than to evaluate Officer Wilson&#8217;s possible innocence.\u00a0 \u201c<\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/eric-holder\/\"><strong><em>Mr. Holder<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/span><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>announced the assignment of 55\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/federal-bureau-of-investigation\/\"><strong><em>FBI<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><strong><em>agents to investigate the officer\u2019s actions and made a conspicuous point of not meeting with police officers who were trying to quell civil unrest.\u201d Mr. Holder made it clear that he believed that the Ferguson police were entirely too militaristic in their approach.\u00a0\u00a0 The goal was clear; Officer Darren Wilson had to be charged.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2014\/dec\/1\/carl-rowan-michael-brown-witness-more-heroic-than-\/#ixzz3MZJRF94f\">http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2014\/dec\/1\/carl-rowan-michael-brown-witness-more-heroic-than-\/#ixzz3MZJRF94f<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The problems in Ferguson, Missouri go far deeper than Michael Brown.\u00a0 The first problem that exists is a population in that community that is 67.4% black and a police force that is 94% white. What does that tell you about the dysfunctionality of that community? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>On August 18, 2014, In the wake of the fatal police shooting of 18-year old Michael Brown, Ferguson Mayor James Knowles was asked about the diversity of his police department: 53 officers, just three of them African-American in a community that&#8217;s 67 percent African-American, according to 2010 Census data. The mayor says it&#8217;s difficult to hire black officers. &#8220;We hire everyone that we can get,&#8221; Knowles said. &#8220;There&#8217;s also the problem that a lot of young African American people don&#8217;t want to go into law enforcement. They already have this disconnect with law enforcement, so if we find people who want to go into law enforcement who are African America,n we&#8217;re all over it because we want them to help us bridge the gap. But these young people, they&#8217;re not interested in law enforcement. There&#8217;s already this frustration with law enforcement.&#8221;\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ksdk.com\/story\/news\/local\/2014\/08\/12\/ferguson-police-department-diversity-questioned-officers\/13976879\/\">http:\/\/www.ksdk.com\/story\/news\/local\/2014\/08\/12\/ferguson-police-department-diversity-questioned-officers\/13976879\/<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s reduce this to \u201cMathematics\u201d.\u00a0 In the 2010 census, 29.3% were White and 67.4% were African American. <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikipedia.com\"><strong>www.wikipedia.com<\/strong><\/a><strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 If the police force is 94% white and the black population is 67.4%, then the probability of a white police officer shooting a black citizen in a confrontation would be approximately 63%.\u00a0\u00a0 Now let\u2019s add ancillary factors affecting the probability.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If the black population is less affluent than the white community and therefore more prone to commit criminal acts by an estimated 30%, then the probably of this confrontation would increase substantially.\u00a0 It may also be inferred that race relations in Ferguson are tense at the very least, so let\u2019s assume that the odds of a confrontation again increase.\u00a0 Extrapolation, using these figures, increases the odds of this confrontation to approach 78%.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The truth is that a black man in Ferguson, Missouri, was eventually going to be shot by a white police officer. The question was not \u201cif\u201d, but rather \u201cwhen\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0And Michael Brown was the unfortunate victim that the laws of probability selected!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>=====================================================\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>So what conclusions can we draw from the events in Ferguson, Mo.?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The public approach, spurred on by a reckless media, was destined to blow an unfortunate event into a national tragedy.\u00a0\u00a0 This situation inevitably had to escalate to a point of no return.\u00a0\u00a0 What actually happened is no longer relevant; the only thing that matters is the convenient assessment of the events, i.e. this must have been a racist incident.\u00a0\u00a0 And that biased conclusion is truly unfortunate on so many levels for the citizens of the United States. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>There will be no winners here.\u00a0\u00a0 The citizens of Ferguson, Missouri and the Sharptonites around the country will believe that the prosecutor swayed the grand jury and that the decision was unjust, regardless of the facts and\/or the testimony presented. \u00a0Since we will never really know what happened in the grand jury room, we have not the right to make the assumption of prejudice. But with the help of mass media, and a presidential agenda, that is exactly what occurred.\u00a0 Although speaking to the contrary, President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder basically gave a license to the angry citizens of Ferguson to riot and loot.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We are at a critical juncture in the history of this country regarding the relationship of our citizens and local police forces.\u00a0\u00a0 If we don\u2019t repair the fissure that has been created by these unfortunate events, the ramifications may be devastating.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Every time an interracial police arrest\/shooting occurs, and an unpopular grand jury decision is handed down, citizens should not be motivated to protest by blocking traffic and disrupting businesses, in essence injuring other innocent parties.\u00a0 We should not be insisting that a Federal Court file civil rights charges against the police officer, in essence, double jeopardy.\u00a0 The attitude should not be \u201cif we can\u2019t convict him one way, we\u2019ll find another\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0We should not be setting the ominous precedent of assuming that every time a white police officer shoots a black person, particularly one with a criminal history, that racism is the underlying reason. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The events in Ferguson, Missouri have put this country on a path of self-destruction that will undo the progress of the last fifty years.\u00a0\u00a0 I would hope that if Martin Luther King were alive today that he would caution the public against this type of radical behavior and look for a more judicious method of reconciliation.\u00a0 Unfortunately, he is not here and there does not appear to be a black leader today that can represent the black community with such dignity and intelligence.\u00a0 And that unfortunately is a major part of the problem that we face.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>There is a youtube video by a young black man named <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Charles Patrick<\/span>.\u00a0 This video gives a perspective that is probably not going to win him any awards with the black community. But he has the courage and conviction to take an adversarial view to so-called leaders like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson who are only detrimental and divisive to the black community.\u00a0 His video is called: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201c<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Will the Real Black Americans Please Stand Up\u201d<\/span>. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xpsQwl_19M4<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>======================================================<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A History Lesson:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Selma, Alabama is a hole in the wall city in America, a blot on the map, population listed in \u00a02010 census of $ 20,756.\u00a0 Yet as much as any major city in American, Selma changed history.\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Selma, Alabama maintained such typical segregated facilities into the 1960s, which had been adapted to new institutions, such as movie theaters. \u00a0Blacks who attempted to eat at &#8220;white-only&#8221; lunch counters or sit in the downstairs &#8220;white&#8221; section of the movie theater were beaten and arrested. More than half of the city&#8217;s residents were black but because of the restrictive electoral laws and practices, only one percent were registered to vote. This prevented them from serving on juries or taking local office.\u00a0<\/em><em>U.S. Civil Rights Commission report<\/em>, 1961\u00a0 <em>Blacks were prevented from registering to vote by the\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Literacy_test\"><em>literacy test<\/em><\/a><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">,<\/span> administered in a subjective way; economic retaliation organized by the\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_Citizens%27_Council\"><em>White Citizens&#8217; Council<\/em><\/a><em>,\u00a0<\/em><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ku_Klux_Klan\"><em>Ku Klux Klan<\/em><\/a><\/span><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>violence, and police repression. For instance, to discourage voter registration, the registration board opened doors for registration only two days a month, arrived late, and took long lunches.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>On March 7, 1965, approximately 600 civil rights marchers departed Selma on\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U.S._Highway_80\"><em>U.S. Highway 80<\/em><\/a><\/span><em>, heading east to march to the capital. When they reached the <\/em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edmund_Pettus_Bridge\"><em>Edmund Pettus Bridge<\/em><\/a><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">,<\/span> only six blocks away, where they were met by state troopers and local sheriff&#8217;s deputies, who attacked them, using\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tear_gas\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">tear gas<\/span><\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>and\u00a0<\/em><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billy_club\">billy clubs<\/a><\/span>, and drove them back to Selma. Because of the attacks, this became known as\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bloody_Sunday_(1965)\"><em>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Bloody Sunday<\/span>.&#8221;<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The events at Selma helped increase public support for the cause, and that year the US Congress passed the\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voting_Rights_Act_of_1965\"><em>Voting Rights Act of 1965<\/em><\/a><\/span><em>.<\/em><em> It provided for federal oversight and enforcement of voting rights for all citizens in state or jurisdictions where patterns of under-representation showed discrimination against certain populations, historically minorities. <\/em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>www.wikipedia.com\/Selma,Alabama<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>======================================================<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2014, the Michael Brown incident in Ferguson, Missouri and the events following may be to 2014 what Selma, Alabama was to 1965.\u00a0\u00a0 This moment in time may represent a turning point for blacks and whites in America, a harbinger of the future of interracial relations in the ensuing years.\u00a0 \u00a0It is a sad commentary on the state of affairs in the United States and the dearth of true leadership at the top.\u00a0\u00a0 Having a black president was supposed to have been a major step forward, moving us into a new age of understanding between races.\u00a0 Instead we have regressed, returning us to the \u201cDark Ages\u201d of American history. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Today is the third day of a New Year, 2015.\u00a0 Let us hope that somehow Americans can get past Ferguson, Missouri and not continue to repeat the mistakes of the past. Let us move into the next decade with renewed hope, understanding, and clarity.
