That was the day Wild Bill Hickok was gunned down in a high stakes poker game, shot in the back by Jack McCall.\u00a0 For Texans, it could have been yesterday.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Texas legislature enacted a new law allowing concealed weapons on college campuses for students and faculty members. In spite of the fact that leaders of the major Texas universities strongly opposed this bill, on June 13, Governor Greg Abbott signed this legislation into law, stating that \u201cTexans can be sure their 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Amendment rights will be stronger and more secure than ever before\u201d. \u00a0(Note: the same day, Gov. Abbott was at Red\u2019s Indoor Range in Pflugerville.) \u00a0Texas has now devolved all campuses in the \u201cGreat State of Texas\u201d into a reenactment of the \u201cWild West\u201d, whether it will be a duel at dawn at TCU or a gunfight at the Rice University corral.\u00a0\u00a0 Some states like to hold celebrations, reenacting scenes from the past. Texans wants to create a \u201ctime warp\u201d, to revive the past and make it the present.\u00a0 (Currently, Texas has over 850,000 concealed handguns license holders. Is anyone scared yet?) \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kxan.com\/6-13-2015\">www.kxan.com\/6-13-2015<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Texas leads the nation in executions every year.\u00a0 Now it has the potential to lead the nation in gunfights every year, cheaper than executions, therefore far more effective.\u00a0 To the best of my knowledge, there is no appeal process for a gunfight killing, one that takes years in court and costs taxpayers millions of dollars in legal fees. \u00a0\u00a0Fiscal conservatism!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Of course, the NRA is celebrating this great victory.\u00a0\u00a0 We can only hope some of the Republican legislators supporting this bill will accidentally get caught in the crossfire.\u00a0\u00a0 Now that would be real \u201cTexas justice\u201d!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In recent years, there have been a plethora of campus killings as a result of random acts of violence.\u00a0\u00a0 The theory behind this new law is that if faculty members &amp; students carry weapons they will be able to defend themselves.\u00a0\u00a0 However, even if one were to assume that a concealed handgun could stave off a barrage of bullets from an uzi or an assortment of other military-style assault weapons, it certainly is not going to solve the problems of individuals with mental health issues from committing these heinous acts.\u00a0 Perhaps laws limiting access to these types of weapons would be a more prudent, and certainly, a more intelligent approach.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On April 16, 2007, Seung- Hui Cho, a senior at Virginia Tech , with a history of mental illness, was responsible for the massacre of 32 students (wounded 17 others).\u00a0 His psychiatric history was withheld from the university as a result of privacy laws.\u00a0 In 2005, a judge declared Cho mentally ill after accusations that he stalked two female students at the university.\u00a0\u00a0 He was ordered to attend treatment, which clearly had minimal affect.\u00a0 Yet, Cho was permitted to purchase guns under Virginia laws because he had never been institutionalized .<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This horrific incident was perpetrated by Cho with the use of two weapons, a .22-caliber Walther P22 semi-automatic handgun and a 9mm semi-automatic Glock 19 handgun.\u00a0\u00a0 Virginia gun laws were strengthened under the the NICS, National Instant Criminal Background Check System.\u00a0 The 1<sup>st<\/sup> new federal gun control law in 13 years was passed.\u00a0 Please note that Virginia never enacted any laws for students and faculty to be permitted to carry concealed weapons in order to prevent future incidents for the simple reason that it might only have exacerbated the destruction perpetrated on this day in 2007. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enwikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia_Tech_Shooting\">www.enwikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia_Tech_Shooting<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The NRA should declare Texas its \u201cfavorite son\u201d.\u00a0 They should change their mantra to \u201cTexas represents the NRA and the NRA represents America\u201d. Only it does not!\u00a0 It represents every redneck American who believes that owning an assault weapon is a God-given right (obviously the Greek God Ares) and that the government is going to attack his\/her home any moment with a secret military unit called SPAF (Secret Police Against Freedom).\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>========================================================\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On June 9, 2015, the 5<sup>th<\/sup> U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Texas legislation intended subversively to close abortion clinics in the state.\u00a0 In showing complete contempt for Roe v. Wade, the court voted to allow Texas to inflict severe regulations on all abortion clinics in the state, in an unmitigated attempt to shut them down.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 These laws put a totally unmanageable financial burden on these facilities, mandating that they spend mega-bucks to upgrade the standards to those of \u201chospital level operating standards\u201d and to impose an arbitrary standard on them that all staff physicians must have admission privileges at a local hospital.\u00a0\u00a0 The net effect is that a woman may have to travel hundreds of miles to access an abortion clinic, basically annihilating her \u201cfreedom of choice\u201d and in direct violation of her civil rights. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Prior to this legislation, Texas has an approximate total of 40 abortion clinics in the state.\u00a0 That number will most probably now be reduced to seven or eight.\u00a0 Note: The total population of Texas in 2014 was approximately 27 million residents.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In Mississippi, a different 5<sup>th<\/sup> U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that \u201cMississippi could not enforce \u201cits admitting privileges law\u201d because enforcement would cause the state\u2019s \u201conly abortion clinic\u201d to close.\u00a0 \u00a0It appears that since Texas would still have a few abortion clinics left in the state, the court ruled that this case was separate and distinct.\u00a0 The court stated in the decision that women in El Paso would not have an undue burden on them because \u201cwomen in El Paso could simply leave the state and travel to New Mexico if they wanted to have the procedure\u201d.\u00a0 Note:\u00a0 the nearest abortion clinic to El Paso remaining open would be in San Antonio, more than 550 miles away.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Of course, Texas women can always cross the border easily into Mexico to \u201cseek back-alley abortions\u201d now that the Religious Right has prevailed legislatively.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Governor Greg Abbott hailed this decision as a major victory for Texas women\u2019s in providing them with better health care protection.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/06\/09\/texas-abortion-law\">http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/06\/09\/texas-abortion-law<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>==========================================================<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Texas should change its Nickname from the \u201cLone Star State\u201d to the \u201cTea Party State\u201d and elect Sarah Palin as its next governor (her non-residence is a minor issue, one that I am certain the Texas Supreme Court can find a way to circumvent, like every other law). \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Truthfully, if Attila the Hun were currently the governor of Texas, it is unclear that the state could be any more barbaric than it currently portrays itself to the nation. \u00a0Question: has anyone checked out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancestry.com\">www.ancestry.com<\/a> to see if Greg Abbott is a direct descendant of Attila?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It is my personal recommendation that Texas secede from the Union.\u00a0 This would validate its \u201cLone Star\u201d status once and for all.\u00a0 It would also save the rest of the country from the mindless legislation that seems to prevail in the comic opera that headlines under the name of \u00a0the Texas Legislature.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For most Americans, August 2, 1876 in Deadwood, Dakota Territory (now South Dakota) was a part of our history long ago, the \u201cWild West\u201d.
