Columbus Day Vignettes

Donald E. Miller is dead. Donald E. Miller is currently standing before a judge and stating that he is not dead. The judge persists by stating to him, in essence, that he is legally dead, so it does not matter if he breathing.  Mr. Miller disappeared in 1994, deserting his family in Ohio to drift off to find work in Georgia and Florida.  In order to collect Social Security benefits for her two children, Robin Miller, his ex-wife, requested a “declaration of death”, which the court ordered...

Nepotism 101, Fort Lee Board of Education Policy or PR?!

In the coming days, it is highly probable that information will be released to the press potentially indicting a certain Board of Education member and a Fort Lee BOE employee for misconduct in performance of their respective duties.   If the history of our current Board prevails, no actions will be taken, even though they are well aware of the circumstances surrounding these allegations.  Please stay tuned. Follow this situation on Twitter:  www.pearlsofwisdm14 ========================...

Does Fort Lee need a Business Expert to run our School System?

The Fort Lee Board of Education is making an “Art” out of shooting itself in the foot! When the BOE finally engaged a new Superintendent and a new principal for Fort Lee High, for a moment it gave the community a sense of relief. Both of them seem to be experienced, competent individuals who have the ability to put the Fort Lee school system back on track toward reestablishing its excellence in Bergen County. Putting aside the recent debacle at Fort Lee High School regarding privileges...

1st Annual Bridgemen Athletics Ad Journal

For many years, fundraising for Fort Lee High School Sports teams in Fort Lee has consisted of selling candy (not the healthiest method), selling athletic gear, primarily t-shirts and sweatshirts; and having athletes sit with “tin cups” (figuratively) in front of Shoprite and the A& P, soliciting donations.   Selling candy probably had a 25% return, clothing 10%, and tin-cupping 100%, but with limited donations.   As a result, our sports programs have suffered, i.e. our high school athletes ...

Lunchroom Drama at Fort Lee High

“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty no safety.   Benjamin Franklin 1775.  When we engaged a new superintendent for the Fort Lee schools it was with the intention of creating stability in a school system suffering from a chaotic 2012 and 2013.   Approximately two weeks after starting his tenure as Superintendent, Paul J. Saxton managed to alienate the entire student population at Fort Lee High School and the majority of the commu...

“Stop and Frisk”, Is Judge Scheindlin on Target?

After reading several articles on Judge Shira A. Scheindlin’s verdict on the New York Police Department’s “stop and frisk” policy, there are certain conclusions that may be drawn: (1) The average individual would personally find it very offensive if a police officer stopped him/her on the streets of NYC under “stop and frisk”. (2) That as much as it is a clearly offensive practice, if it substantially reduces the crime rate in NYC, this policy may be worth the inconvenience. (3) The “st...

Contracting Dementia

“When we speak about dementia, it would seem that this disease is most prevalent among our politicians. They seem to forget everything they promise during their campaigns the day after they are elected.” ==================================================== As we approach retirement age, it is very common to have simple memory lapses.   In the modern world, that is described as follows:  humans have a limited amount of megabytes of memory capacity in their brains.  When full capacity ha...

Is Dennis McKeever, Esq. Running the Fort Lee BOE?

After attending the Fort Lee BOE meeting on Monday, July 29, 2012, there were two major conclusions that would seem pretty obvious: (1)  That Dennis McKeever, Esq., Board Attorney is controlling the show. (2)  That more information on what is going on with the Fort Lee school system can be obtained by reading a fortune cookie at a local Chinese restaurant than from a BOE meeting these days. One major question that should be asked regarding last night’s meeting is “Why was there a me...

Board Attorney Embarrasses Fort Lee BOE

When is a crisis a crisis?  After Monday night’s BOE meeting, the definition of a crisis becomes when the Board attorney speaks.  Dennis McKeever, Board Attorney, was quoted in the Record on Tuesday, July 23, 2013.  In response to a question from one of the attendees, Mr. McKeever publically stated that “The board is very much aware of the fact that in the event that, no superintendent is appointed, … it is possible that the state or the county [state liaison to local districts] ...

Starbucks Spurns Fort Lee Children

Starbucks Coffee prints a motto on the back of their business cards:  “One person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time.”  If you read it carefully, it sounds a bit like the credo of an Alien nation about to invade Earth. For the record, Seattle is a nice town, or at least when the smog is not creating total overcast.  The Space Needle is spectacular and Grey’s Anatomy is not a bad show, all things being considered.   So any opinions I may have regarding Starbucks and its policies are ...
